Budget-Friendly Charcuterie Board

A full charcuterie board depends as much on arrangement as on the amount of food. On a medium wooden board, overlapping runs of two round crackers make room for folded meats, two cheeses, and separate clusters of grapes. Cut one cheddar block into squares and cubes for variety without buying another cheese. Sliced strawberries stay in a small bowl, and well-dried grapes help keep the crackers crisp.

This no-cook board takes about 20 minutes to assemble and makes approximately 8 to 10 appetizer servings. Cost and portions will vary by store, package size, and what else you serve.

Ingredients for the Charcuterie Board

Full wooden charcuterie board with crackers, meats, cheeses, grapes, and a strawberry bowl on a pale countertop
  • About 4 oz light round crackers, approximately 20 to 24 (115g)
  • About 4 oz golden round crackers, approximately 20 to 24 (115g)
  • 8 oz cheddar cheese, preferably a block (225g)
  • 8 oz mild pale cheese, such as Monterey Jack (225g)
  • 4 oz sliced salami (115g)
  • 4 oz sliced pepperoni (115g)
  • 4 oz thinly sliced deli ham (115g)
  • About 8 oz green grapes (225g)
  • About 8 oz purple grapes (225g)
  • About 8 oz strawberries (225g)

You will also need a food-safe rectangular serving board and a small bowl for the strawberries. A board around 12 by 16 inches is a useful starting point; choose a smaller one if the ingredients would leave large gaps.

How to Assemble the Charcuterie Board

  1. Prepare the fruit: Wash the grapes and strawberries, then dry them thoroughly. Hull and slice the strawberries and place them in the bowl. Keep the green and purple grapes separate.
  2. Cut the cheeses: Cut part of the cheddar into thin squares and the rest into small cubes. Cut the pale cheese into wedges or wedge-like slices.
  3. Arrange the bowl and crackers: Set the strawberry bowl toward the upper right of the board. Overlap the light and golden crackers in two broad diagonal runs through the center, keeping both kinds visible and leaving pockets for the other ingredients.
  4. Add fruit and meats: Cluster green grapes near one end of the board and purple grapes near the other. Loosely fold the salami and pepperoni into separate groups, then roll the ham slices into a third cluster. The folds give the meats height without spreading them thinly across the board.
  5. Fill the gaps: Fan the cheddar squares along a lower edge, place the cubes toward the upper edge, and tuck the pale cheese into groups at the sides. Tighten the clusters until little bare board shows, without crushing the crackers. Serve promptly.

How to Keep the Board Full Without Overspending

Compare store-brand basics and assorted sliced-meat packs with separate packages; an assortment works if it still provides visibly different meats. Seasonal fruit and ingredients already on hand may also affect the cost. There is no fixed price for this board.

If the food looks spread thin, move it to a smaller board or tighten the clusters rather than adding food just to cover empty wood. Keep extra meat, cheese, and fruit refrigerated and replenish the board as needed.

Make-Ahead and Storage

You can cut the cheeses and wash and thoroughly dry the fruit ahead of time. Refrigerate the perishable ingredients separately, then assemble the board and add the crackers close to serving. The bowl contains strawberry juice, while drying the grapes keeps water away from nearby crackers.

Pack leftover meats, cheeses, and fruit separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Store leftover crackers separately at room temperature. Do not leave perishable food at room temperature for more than 2 hours, or more than 1 hour when the temperature is above 90°F (30°C).

Charcuterie Board Variations

For a gluten-free board, use two varieties of gluten-free crackers and check other packaged-ingredient labels as needed. For a vegetarian board, omit or replace the meats; a vegan version also needs vegan cheeses. These adaptations will look different from the main board.
