Cottage Cheese & Fruit Bowl

Visible cottage cheese curds make the base of these no-cook breakfast bowls. Strawberries and blueberries get a light coating of honey and lime, then sit over one side of each bowl with a few mint leaves. Dry the berries well and add them just before serving: the fruit stays distinct, and its juices are less likely to collect around the cheese. The recipe makes two bowls in about 10 minutes.

Ingredients for Cottage Cheese & Fruit Bowls

Close view of cottage cheese curds beside cut strawberries, whole blueberries, and mint
  • 2 cups cottage cheese (about 450g)
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, hulled and halved or quartered (about 150g)
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries (about 150g)
  • 2 teaspoons honey (about 15g)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
  • 4 to 6 small fresh mint leaves

Choose a cottage cheese with a texture you enjoy; no particular fat percentage is needed. For more lime aroma without extra liquid, add an optional small pinch of finely grated lime zest to the dressing.

How to Make Cottage Cheese & Fruit Bowls

Complete cottage cheese and berry bowl on a pale tabletop, with fruit covering half the curds
  1. Prepare the berries: Wash and thoroughly dry the strawberries and blueberries. Hull and halve or quarter the strawberries; leave the blueberries whole.
  2. Dress the fruit: Stir the honey and lime juice together in a small bowl. Just before serving, gently toss with the berries. They should have a light sheen, not sit in a pool of dressing.
  3. Fill the bowls: Spoon 1 cup of unblended cottage cheese into each of two shallow bowls. Divide the berries over roughly half of each bowl, leaving a broad area of white curds visible. Do not stir the fruit into the cheese.
  4. Finish: Tuck 2 to 3 small mint leaves among the berries in each bowl and serve promptly.

Textured or Whipped Cottage Cheese?

For the curded bowl shown here, spoon the cottage cheese straight into the bowls. If you prefer a smooth base, briefly whip it before adding the berries. The topping stays the same, but the finished bowl will have a different texture and appearance.

How to Keep the Berry Topping Fresh

Water left on washed berries, extra lime juice, or dressing the fruit too early can leave liquid around the topping. Measure the lime juice, dry the berries well, and toss them with the dressing only when you are ready to assemble.

Make-Ahead and Serving

For next-morning assembly, keep the cottage cheese covered in the refrigerator and store the washed, dried berries separately. Dress the fruit and add the mint when ready to serve. Fully assembled bowls are best eaten promptly because the berries can release liquid as they sit.

Serve as breakfast or a snack. For a bigger breakfast, add Healthy Zucchini Muffins with Oat-Topped Domes on the side.
